Green Table

Road Trip Day 6 – Telluride, CO to Albuquerque, NM – 398 miles

As we inch our way closer to Texas we realize we are running out of National Parks to visit and the closer for me to see my home in over 75 days, wow that is a long time for me.

Spruce Tree House Cliff Dwellings; the most well preserved dwellings

We were surprised how close they would let you get to sites that were built from 600 – 1300 AD

Cliff Palace Dwellings; the largest of the dwellings

We took a tour of the Balcony House Dwellings, which required the most adventure to get around

Had to do a 12ft crawl to get out the front door

I am thinking the chains were a 19th century upgrade

Visited Arizona for about 10 miles
When you’re thinking of visiting the Four Corners National Monument you figure it’s just some plaque out in the middle of nowhere, not a tourist attraction on Navajo Land

Into the land of enchantment
Great sunset, but sadly at the cost of the largest recorded fire in New Mexico history
After staying in a tent the last 3 out of 6 nights we took it up a BIG notch by staying in the 4 star Hotel Parq Central in New Mexico – http://hotelparqcentral.com
No need to leave the hotel to find a relaxing time
The hotel was originally opened in 1926 as a hospital, which eventually shutdown in the mid 90’s as a children’s mental ward, and then reopened October 2010 as the hotel.  We were hoping to see some ghosts but these kids had nothing compared to camping in the outdoors

    Beautiful pics – just amazing. My parents visited the Cliff Place Dwellings a few years back and were just amazed at how these people lived. Congrats on being FP!

    I lived in Arizona briefly as a kid. The desert and mountains are beautiful and a fun place to get lots of exercise. These are great photos. It looked like you had fun. Thanks for this post.

    I don’t know if anybody told you, but the 4 corners monument is actually about a half mile off. This was determined about 2 or 3 years ago when the area was re-surveyed for some reason. I wonder how long it will take for the monument plaque and related stuff to be moved where it belongs.

    Such beautiful country all around the area you were in. I traveled the area for a few weeks many years ago and miss it a lot.

    Whew! Love all the climbing you two did – inspiring to see you clambering around in what might be ancient precursors to townhouses. They certainly knew what they were doing when they built those – wonderful!

    Lovely pictures! I’ve been in those places myself, and they really are wonderful.
    If I may be your travel guide for a little, you should visit the Abiquiu area, it’s absolutely gorgeous, I’ve been there quite a few times now, but it still takes my breath away. There is this hike trail in Ghost ranch, Box Canyon, it’s called, you should do it. Have fun!

    I’ve been to Mesa Verde twice though I haven’t taken any of the tours. Looks like I need to visit a third time; the Balcony House Tour looked really neat!
