15 Minutes of Fame

Aurangabad, India (map)

India definitely gave us some surprises during our visit, but there were also things that we never expected from the country.

First, we had no clue that India was home to so many UNESCO World Heritage Sites. I know that before we left for this yearlong adventure hearing the term UNESCO  (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) probably would not have meant much, but we have found ourselves utilizing the UNESCO World Heritage List to guide us as we enter into country after country. Basically this list includes 962 properties forming part of the cultural and natural heritage which the World Heritage Committee considers as having outstanding universal value. We have visited numerous sites already in our travels this year, but we could not believe how many just the country of India has!

The second surprise from India has been Dustin and I discovering our own 15 minutes of fame. No we are not actually famous, but during our visit to India we definitely felt like we were superstars. After posing for photo after photo with kind Indian families, holding small babies as well, we have realized that being a celebrity really must be hard work! We were flattered by the attention, but we are happy being just the regular Texan couple we are.

The third surprise was the Indian Wedding. Yes, we all have heard how incredible Indian weddings can be and that they often last multiple days. We really could not have dreamed up what we were fortunate enough to experience while in Aurangabad with our friends. Sumita’s cousin had recently been married in northern India and we were invited to experience a true Indian wedding reception. The pictures don’t do this extravaganza justice!

Preparing ourselves for seeing the real Taj Mahal by visiting the Bibi Ka Maqbara, AKA the Mini Taj Mahal in Aurangabad
When we first began to notice we were being noticed 😉
Outside the city we went exploring
The incredible Ellora Caves, dating back to the 5th Century, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Anything you can do I can do better!

Even on our hike up to the top of the Fort we were stopped for a photo!
