Chasing Whales

Hermanus, South Africa (map)

As you may recall from a few posts ago we visited a small town in Patagonia called Puerto Madryn. One of the great things about visiting this time of year is the opportunity you get to see Southern Right Whales. We did get to see them and they were of course beautiful. What we didn’t realize is that we would soon travel thousands of miles and get a chance to see them again!

Hermanus is one of the famous places in South Africa to see these same whales. Funny enough we happened to arrive during the annual Whale Festival. Dustin and I kept asking the locals how is it that the whales know that their festival is taking place 😉

After arriving to the small coastal town we literally sat on a bench for just a few minutes before the nearby whales started showing off their skills. It was incredible to see in person. Once we got our fill we headed off to visit some of the nearby vineyards. We had chosen to skip the more touristy wine areas like Stellenbosch and boy did it pay off. The wine route was ridiculously gorgeous and we had one on one attention at the vineyards. I have visited numerous wine regions now in my life and I have to say this area was exactly as they describe it. The Hermanus Wine route is called “Hemel-en-Aarde” or in English “Heaven on Earth”. The pictures just can’t do justice!

Our first vineyard on the Hermanus Wine Route
This region is known for their yummy Pinot Noirs

Lucky us we arrived in the afternoon and had the entire place to ourselves
La Vierge had very over the top bottle labels we really enjoyed
Unbelievable views
Leave it to my husband to find a kid needing bicycle help on the way to our next winery

The Hermanus Wine route is known as Hemel-en-Aarde, which translates to Heaven on Earth…it is easy to see how they came up with the name!
After our vineyard tours we headed to our own bench to watch the sunset
There were plenty of waves…
And to continue the day right…there was more wine!
Leaving Hermanus we viewed amazing scenery on the famed Garden Route
We even captured our very own Microsoft Desktop picture…perhaps where the original was taken by Mr. Gates?
