The Beach

Koh Phi Phi, Thailand (map)

While we were in Phang Nga we were still trying to decide where we wanted to venture next. So many people had told us that if we came to Thailand we just had to go to Phi Phi island (pronounced Pee Pee) and also visit Maya Bay, which is where the movie The Beach with good old Leonardo DiCaprio was filmed. At the same time hearing that recommendation we also had people telling us to skip it and that it was just too crowded and overrun with annoying tourists. Knowing that wherever we went next would likely be where we brought in the New Year, we both decided we just had to go and see for ourselves.

We left Phang Nga and headed toward Phuket where we returned the scooter and caught the local bus that would take us to Phuket town. We boarded the ferry bound for Phi Phi and right away I felt like I was on my way to Cancun Spring break! So many young people, we really felt old 😉

After a 2 hour ferry we arrived to the island and immediately we realized that yes, this place is touristy and more crowded than lets say Koh Muk, but it will be GREAT for people watching! We also saw what everyone had described, the island really is beautiful.

We luckily found a pretty nice hotel for a good price (for us A/C was a requirement) and we headed for the beach. We spent the next week exploring the island, taking a snorkeling trip over to the infamous Maya bay, and of course celebrating the start of 2013. January 2nd also marked 6 months of WeGoRTW. 2012 was definitely an incredible year for us and we are excited with what is still to come in 2013.

Happy New Year everyone!

The interesting way liquor drinks are sold on the island, you literally drink straight from the bucket after you mix it all together!

  1. Looks like a great place and a lot of fun. I love those bucket drinks, never seen them before.

Great work on bigging up Totally Sam’s World, another fab travel blog.

Happy New Year to you both.

    1. Your pictures look great. We are considering spending new year on phi phi or in kuala lumpur.
Did you enjoy Phi Phi and the celebrations ?

      Thanks

      1. Hi Jodie,
We had such an awesome time on Phi Phi for New Years. It was definitely busy and the prices were a bit inflated since that is considered high season, but it was perfect weather and great people watching! Have so much fun!
        Thanks for your comment.

  2. Great photo’s! I came across your post as my friend and I are travelling to Thailand for NYE and looking at where to go etc. did you head to the beach for NYE or did you book somewhere?
Also, any info on your accommodation would be great, there are so many options that I’m getting a little overwhelmed! 😉
