The Big 5

Kruger National Park, South Africa (map)

In many of the countries we have visited there have been specific highlights not to miss. A few thus far have been Machu Picchu in Peru, Iguazu Falls in Argentina and Uyuni Salt Flats in Bolivia. We knew that when visiting South Africa that Kruger National Park was a must see for us.

Having a rental car throughout the country has been a major benefit and once we did some research we realized it would work out perfectly to do our own safari drive through Kruger Park. We headed toward Kruger and stayed the night in a small town called Hazyview located very close to one of the park entrances. We entered the next morning with the goal to basically drive ~8 hours to the camp where we had Safari Tent reservations for overnight. Lucky for us within the first couple miles into the park we saw our first wildlife…LIONS!

From then on our luck just kept coming. In fact, most people we talked to later could not believe how we could have possibly seen what we did in that 1 day. Even though it was a rainy, wet day during our visit to Kruger, the day was awesome AND our rental car didn’t get charged by any wild animals which = Kruger success 🙂

List of animals pictured: Blue Wildebeest, Buffalo, Chacma Baboon, Common Duiker, Common Reedbuck, Elephant, Giraffe, Helmeted Guineafowl, Hippopotamus, Impala, Leopard, Leopard Tortoise, Lion, Nyala, Plains Zebra, Rhinoceros, Warthog, & Waterbuck.

  1. That’s awesome! Except for the baboons, I hate baboons :)….did any of them jump on your tent at night or on top of your car? They are vicious little things, with gaint teeth! Ahh, the joys of Safari life. Still wish I could do it again, Kruger Park looks beautiful!

    1. We heard some banging on our tent roof in the morning but we were thinking it was just our neighbors mad at us for staying up late and partying with the other tent neighbors. 🙂
